PNEUMA

Neil Atienza, Expi Perez, Yas Sehob

This exhibition is a move towards the fundamental. The title, Pneuma, is an ancient Greek concept which has been popularly interpreted as 'soul,’ ‘breath,’ or ‘spirit’ through the centuries.

While the exact meaning of the concept has differed across various traditions of thought, pneuma has consistently been understood as that which constitutes one’s core: an intrinsic, generative force that breathes life and creativity.

Neil Atienza (1995) is a visual artist based in Lipa, Batangas and Bolinao, Pangasinan. Atienza graduated Fine Arts Major in Visual Communications from Philippine Women's University. He has participated in exhibitions across notable galleries in Metro Manila.

Atienza explores both physical and inner landscapes through his art. His works manifest a sense of connection to our inner selves and a deeper understanding of the world and our consciousness, providing a space for viewers to dive deep in their own personal memories and interpret them in their own.

Expi Perez is a Filipino artist born in 1989 and is currently based in Marikina. He specializes in oil painting, known for his semi-abstract works on canvas and paper. Using a palette knife and oil paint, his art delves into the human condition, exploring themes of acceptance and balance amidst chaos. His creations blend figuration and abstraction, often depicting fragmented memories and ambiguous, residual visual images.

Yas Sehob (b. 1994) delves into themes of love, the human condition, and societal distortions. Drawing inspiration from dance and calligraphy, Sehob's creative process often begins with choreographed movements or raw emotions translated into visual form. She frequently disfigures forms to challenge traditional ideas of representation.

Sehob's fascination with the expressive potential of various materials—from paints to plexiglass and wax—is evident in her tactile and dynamic works. Currently, she is exploring the interplay between intention and flow, and she is increasingly intrigued by the intersections between her artistic practice and systems such as dance notation, economic models, and calculus.

The works of Niel Atienza, Expi Perez, and Yas Sehob reflect this turn inwards.
Melding abstraction and figuration, they contemplate the innate forces that propel their respective artistic practices.

Niel Atienza’s vistas of land, sea, and cosmic bodies depict sceneries that are both physical and personal.

His process, which he describes as at once perceptive and detached, uses memories as a creative tool to
navigate his inner self and consciousness.

Whereas Atienza employs memory as his device, Expi Perez wields it as his subject matter.
First known for his oil on canvas works, his present series on paper evinces an impressionist fervor that renders memories as fragmented and ambiguous figments.
Against a world of hurry, Sehob looks inward and searches for meaning beneath the sine waves and buzzes of contemporary life.
