Description

A  sad love story from the Ibanags, the tale of Luna and Mar is believed to be the origin of high tides. It is said that the moon goddess and sun god's daughter, Luna fell in love with the sea god's son, Mar. The two would meet in a secret garden where the moon would glow fully and shine bright, while they talk about many things and Mar's life in the sea. The sun god was angered believing the two had broken the Immortal Laws. Mar was imprisoned deep in the caves in the depths of the dark ocean. When Luna found out, she rode a golden chariot to see him. In Mar's attempts to break free, he sent crashing waves to the shores. They never found each other again. Hence Ibanags believe, that when the moon is at its brightest, so will the strength of the waves come to try to reach her.
