Description

Mebu'yan, the Bagobo goddess of the underworld, was always known for her features—particularly the breasts all over her body. It was believed she would feed the babies until the time they would be allowed to go to Sulod (Heaven). But little did the people know, she also possessed a magical tree, which holds all the lives of the Bagobo people. The tree bore unique fruits, some aged, some budding, some ripe. Whichever she chooses and bites on, dies. When the tree branches shake hard, so too did the upper ground where all people lived, causing tremors or worse, earthquakes.

About the Artist

Widening the range of what paper can do, Tin Javier expresses folklore and mythical themes with collage as punched papers, reused packaging materials and gift wrappers all come to life in her unique way. The Cavite native tries to fuse her art with her own advocacies for climate change, culture and heritage, and human rights and social awareness especially with the indigenous people. Her works have been featured in art magazines, children's books and have been recognized here and abroad.
