Small Stories and Love Letters

Aldy Aguirre

Feb 17 To Mar 17, 2025

Aldy Aguirre’s latest collection with Cartellino affirms that love does not need multitudes to be told. It takes inspiration from the artist-illustrator’s experience writing letters by hand, where the modesty of paper becomes a site for the vastness of one’s thoughts and emotions.

Aldy Aguirre is an artist and illustrator based in Quezon City, Philippines. He's a member of AngINK and most of his works can be seen in children’s books from different publishers and independent writers. He has been given awards and recognition for his works locally by the Philippine Board on Books for the Young People (PBBY) and National Book Development Board (NBDB; and abroad by ILUSTRARTE in Castelo Branco, Portugal, and Sharjah Exhibition for Children’s Book Illustrations. His illustrations for the book, "Papuntang Community Pantry", were recently chosen as a finalist in the 2022 Bologna Children’s Book Fair Illustrators competition; and the book, "Si Kian", is included in the White Ravens Catalog by the International Youth Library in Munich, Germany.

“I love the idea that a small piece of paper can be a place to fit your emotions, thoughts, and feelings. The reader can have a different take on the letter, but the writer also has their own intention.”

The collection thus signifies Aguirre’s continuing affinity with storytelling through a series of small watercolor works on paper.

Expansiveness constitutes his approach with the medium: pigment flows freely across the surface, figures gesture towards what lay beyond the edges of the frame.

Altogether, they reside and drift among clouds of dream, longing, and hope—tales that unfold despite and through the breadth of Aguirre’s material.
