Identity, Memory, and History Through the Lens of Three Contemporary Artists

A painting holds a lot more than we think it does. The colors, strokes, and size tell us a lot about the meaning behind each artwork. In a group exhibition at Pace Gallery Hong Kong, renowned Contemporary Artists Zhang Xiaogang, Mao Yan, and Qiu Xiaofei explore the notions of identity, memory, and history through the power of painting as both a process and a medium of expression and communication. Zhang Xiaogang integrates his introverted and sensitive qualities into portraits and scenes painted through somber grays and saturated colors, rendered through extremely refined brushwork. Mao Yan depicts everyday faces with fine and delicate brushstrokes in gray tones, allowing viewers to be in a state of meditation and tranquility in a fast-paced world. Qiu Xiaofei's exploration leads him to expressive all-over abstractions that contain broad brushstrokes building a creative dialogue between material and concepts of memory and representation.
