About the Artist

Larry Alcala (1926-2002) was a pioneering Filipino editorial cartoonist and illustrator celebrated for his lasting impact on visual arts in the Philippines. He began his cartooning career in 1946 with the comic strip Islaw Palitaw and later created Kalabog en Bosyo, which became notable for its use of Taglish and everyday Filipino humor. Over his 56-year career, Alcala created over 500 cartoon characters, twenty comic strips, six films, and two murals, with his work appearing on 15,000 published pages. He played a key role in advancing commercial art and illustration, establishing the Visual Communication Department at the University of the Philippines' College of Fine Arts, where he also taught for three decades.

Recognized posthumously in 2018 as a National Artist for Visual Arts, Alcala was awarded the Grand Collar of the Order of National Artists. His advocacy included promoting young illustrators, founding Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang INK) for children’s book illustrators. His work, which extended to animated TV commercials, embodied his belief in the role of cartoons in education and character formation, earning him the title “Dean of Filipino Cartoonists” from the Philippine Board on Books for Young People in 1997.
