Art Taipei concludes today at the Taipei World Trade Center. The fair started on October 18, featuring 141 galleries from 12 countries. This year's theme is "Reproduction of Light" for the infinite possibilities a light represents. Light is also a symbolism of hope and beginnings. And this year, Art Taipei has successfully brought light upon an important discussion through artist Alixe Fu.
At the center of the fair, people find two of Fu's latest shape-shifting sculptures, "Outstanding in the World" and "Bravery" from her "Sign Me" series. Anyone can write, doodle, or sign on the sculptures as part of her initiative to bring awareness to the environmental crisis we are facing today. The sculptures stand on a depiction of the earth and clouds made of plastic are floating above them. To the artist, the earth, the oceans, the air we breathe are all property of the people who reside the planet thus the idea of making the art interactive—for everyone to consume and enjoy. And just like it is ours, everyone has the power to contribute to its preservation.
There has been an influx of public art and during days of crisis like climate change art has not been quiet. The installation is just one of the many ways people are able to learn more and contribute to society. Art Taipei ends today, October 21, 2019.
